Weekend trip to Jhb - how to maximise one's eating abilities
On the agenda for this past weekend:
- A very long journey in the car (x2)
- Friends, eating and childhood memories
- Red Hot Chilli Peppers
We lunched at Vovo Telo and the aroma of freshly baked bread from their own brick oven was enough to make any item on the menu look seriously inviting. One of the pluses of Jhb is the lack of humidity - your lungs don't feel like they're swimming and you don't slip and slide on plastic (albeit expensive) chairs.
After dropping friends off, a severely well catered-for braai took place. Many awesome people were met and I got indigestion from laughing so much. Needless to say, the blow-up mattress felt like a king-sized bed when I collapsed into it.
Back in the day when I lived in Johannesburg and one of the most happiest memories was visiting the Oaklands Shopping Centre (Cnr Pretoria & Kruger Street). Treats would be a big box of cherries from the Greengrocer (yes I do love fruit and veg, who am I kidding), moist biltong from the Butcher, and of course, artichokes from the Italian Deli, Tortellini D'Oro.
Our selection of delicacies were eaten in a park, and of course, we couldn't complete the meal without proper olive oil, which we found at a random market en route to Sandton.
In the heart of Soweto you can find this amazing club with deep house tunes, a butchery on one side and a bottle store on the other. What a monopoly! You buy your meat and 707 will cook if for you together with chakalaka and pap, and if you purchase your drinks at the bottle store, all you need to do is show the bouncers your till-slip (yes, there are bouncers at 3 in the afternoon) and you can take your drinks inside.
An incredible atmosphere with so many people we all recognised from school and varsity; everyone celebrating and getting excited in anticipation for the evening ahead! You would think there would be more people of colour in Club 707, but as the resident DJ joked, all "residents of the South went to the North and visa versa". It was Kanye too.
